This year, Guangyang Secondary School held its annual Sports Day at Yio Chu Kang stadium as its usual home, Bishan Stadium, is under renovation for the upcoming Asian Youth Games. Other than a new environment, this sports meet also has another thing to rejoice about – the good weather. Last year, due to bad weather, the annual sports meet was unfortunately cancelled. With the fine weather, students were seen streaming in as early as one o’clock. Clad in different colors, the attire of the students did help to lift the atmosphere up. Music was also played to lift up the spirit of the students. By around two o’clock, when most students and teachers had reached, the school was already in a buzz of excitement. The discipline master, Mr. Goh, then took over to get the school in order. The school had to assemble on the field, under the hot scorching sun. Perhaps the heat was too blazing for the school to remain silent; there was an ongoing buzz amongst the students. The school only became quiet when Mr. Goh vociferated at some students. After that, house by house, groups of students went up the grandstand. Respect, Responsibility, Care and Concern, Integrity and Perseverance – these are the new names for the various houses since 2007. The colours are red, purple, yellow, orange and green respectively. These different names reflect the underlying principles the school wishes to inculcate in her students throughout their education here. Soon after, the first match kick-started. It was the 100m C boys. Right from the start, the race proved to be an excitement. Students could be heard cheering and encouraging their friends, classmates and housemates. Such is the spirit Guangyang wants to inculcate in their students. After the 100 and 200m races, came the inter-CCA match. It was a close fight among the participating CCAs. In the end, it was the soccer team which proved to be the most united CCA of all; showcasing their team spirit, might and determination. Following up was the exhilarating staff relay! It was a 400m sprint which saw not four but five teachers running. In addition, we saw three groups of VIP clashing the event. They were the two alumni teams and one former-teacher team. The VIP swept the top three placing though the trophies were agreed to go to strictly current staff only. It was nonetheless worth a mention as the presence of the alumni teams shows that Guangyang is a place worth returning back for. Next, we had the grueling 400m sprints! By then, the whole school was already hyped up. Cheer leaders from the various houses were seen leading their own houses to cheer their housemates up. It was indeed a very encouraging scene. Demonstrating teamwork, the next event – the 4-by-100m relay –was yet another thrilling match!
Following up was the anticipated cheerleading competition. Kick starting the event was Responsibility. They put up a splendid performance! Then, we had Integrity. Although there was no stunt, I thought we should applaud their bravery for sending out a team which consisted of only lower secondary students. Perseverance also put up a good show. Last but not least, we had Respect. Showing their might not only on track and field, the cheerleading team put on a wonderful performance, with many eyes glued to their stunts and beautiful hip-hop dance steps. It was no wonder, they triumphed the event with a score doubled that of the first runner-up.
Before the day ended, we had the long-awaited prize ceremony. We were privileged to have with us one of the Parents Support Group committee members, Mdm. Nuraini, to grace the event. She gave out trophies and medals to the athletes who were of the top three placing.
In short, the sports meet was a great success. Written by: Yan Yu Shine Member
